The craziest shooters of 2024 and 2020 join forces as Ultrakill enters Madjack’s Mullet

You can keep your CODs, BLOPS and live service shooters that could pouf cease to exist at any time. Give me a grim cyberpunk world, comical killing animations, and a hero with the retro sensibilities of Duke Nukem (minus the archaic attitude towards women) and you’ll have my attention. Mullet Madjack ticks all these boxes, enhancing the intensity of the gameplay through its roguelite structure and the jaw-dropping hook of having to kill an enemy every 10 seconds to avoid dying.

It’s a hell of a lot of fun, made even better with an update that includes a connection to fellow super-fast shooter Ultrakill. The crossover is part of Madjack’s modern Boss Rush Mode, in which you try to destroy the procession of mechs, cyber-samurai and other “robot billionaires” that rule this dopamine-fueled world. Boss Rush mode is linked to a global leaderboard, so you’ll be able to compare your fighting exploits with other players from around the world.

As you shoot, slash and ax your way through the game’s existing bosses in Boss Rush mode, you’ll come to a final confrontation with the substantial, bad V2 Utrakill, a red cycloptic “Supreme Machine” armed with a shotgun and an arm that can wrap around you Scorpion-style.

Mullet Madjack is a great game, although with the caveat that it’s a roguelite, which seems to be the Marmite genre these days. This means you’ll be able to load up your Madjack with lots of cold, random power-ups, but when you die (and you die a lot), you’ll start over from the first of the game’s 10 levels. If this tickles your dopamine receptors, good news, because the game is 25% off. Couple AND GOG (just under $15/£13) right now, which means now’s a good time to get your hands on it.
