James Gunn’s Superman just got its first trailer: some love it, some don’t, and we can’t tell if Krypto or Lois Lane has a bigger army state

The generous trailer for Superman, written and directed by James Gunn, is finally here, and you can bet everyone has a powerful opinion of it, good and bad. Here’s a quick look at the current buzz on the internet.

As for the first look, this one seems quite classic and uplifting from my personal point of view. It’s also a sporadic type of trailer that doesn’t reveal much about the actual plot and character dynamics. That said, we fully expect future promotional materials to be bolder in their approach to convincing us of the story and characters. This kind of vibe-based announcement is exactly what people needed right now, especially when it’s so openly hopeful and the complete opposite of the overdue DCEU’s plans for Kal-El/Clark Kent.

Let’s start with words of praise first. It’s no surprise that most of the buzz online seems to be positive after the first trailer, mainly because Gunn has earned audiences’ trust for over a decade with the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (and a great Christmas special), Suicide Squad, Peacemaker and Creature Commando. Even as it explores darker themes and plot elements, at the end of the day it remains hopeful and poignant. The Superman reboot seems to be doubling down on this issue, and it’s also a good exercise for the filmmaker after dealing with some of the gorier stuff in his other recent films in the DC camp (which he now co-directs with Peter Safran).

“It’s just a comic book come to life. “Superman Nation, we have won.” writes ClarkQuill97 on Twitter. As you can tell from the username, this user is a Superman fan and probably had high hopes for him. So far they are satisfied.

Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane is gaining a ton of fans, even after just one trailer:

The massive PridefulSin comic book fan account is also sold within the film due to its special emphasis on Superman actually saving and inspiring people. These are the types of large voices you want to convince at first glance:

“Krypto will put butts on seats” predicted by illustrator Dan Veesenmeyer. He’s probably right. People love good boys. “I have the biggest smile on my face right now.” figure added to the Ultima game. It’s definitely a clear mission to rock the world of comic book adaptations with a caped super dog!

On the cinematic side, the buzz seems to be mostly positive, with users praising the fact that Superman is back in character an innocent boy scout instead of a stranger with bipolar disorder. I kind of liked what Zack Snyder was going for, but it was the kind of thing you were trying to adapt After do it, not before! “Oh, so this is a real Superman movie and not some edgy mess.” Even “The Simpsons Couch Gags Out of Context” he said.

Of course, not everyone likes the lighter (both thematically and visually) approach to charactersand some have expressed legitimate concerns that some scenes look too “made for TV” (but we must remember that the film has just entered post-production). “I won’t be an idiot and say it’s a ‘fake movie’ but the quality isn’t up to the levels I expected.” expressed ComicAccuracy with a gentle approach.

Eric Italiano of BroBible also wanted to like what he saw, but was “troubled by the aesthetics” and tried to put it diplomatically:

Other people weren’t so nice:

You get the idea now. Some people like the atmosphere, some don’t, maybe because they are still fighting for the “SnyderVerse” or simply because they would prefer a different, more adult take on the character. The beauty of comics, especially when it comes to legendary characters like Superman (who has been around for a long, long time), is that so many takes on the character are equally valid. Gunn is simply bringing back some of the Silver Age style, and if his DCU is successful and evolves, I’m sure the characters and tone will evolve as well.

Regardless of what you think of the trailer and movie, we all agree that Krypto himself can be a box office success, and we hope he doesn’t get hurt by evil businessman Lex Luthor. Everything else is up in the air and will remain so for some time film premiere on July 11, 2025.
