Fists up, a gigantic mod for the fighting game is coming out this weekend. Marvel vs Capcom Infinite was released in 2017 and received criticism for the art style of the plastic figures. However, this year the modder started working on a change that would give the game a cel-shaded look. Since then, the modding team has grown to 40 people and the mod’s scope of features has expanded significantly. It will now feature up-to-date moves, stages, costumes, and a chaotic-looking 2v2 tag team multiplayer mode. Good news for the crazies, as the mod is scheduled to be released on Friday.
They call the mod “Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite And Beyond”. It’s worth noting that Buzz Lightyear is not a character from either universe, but let’s leave it at that. The trailer above shows off a lot of bulky black outlines, halftone effects, and a flash of Venom as he dons the adorable blue symbiote. You can also take a look at Spider-Man’s alternate costume – the disguise of the British quipster Spider-Punk, which appeared in the latest animated webslinger film Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse. Cool.
We also get a look at some of these up-to-date arenas, which we’re told are a “nod” to scenes previously used in the series. I don’t play a lot of MvC, so I only recognize the wireframe training room from Street Fighter. Please don’t take away my “Biff’em Up” badge. I worked demanding for it.
You will be able to download the mod band’s website when the premiere will take place on December 20, say the creators. “It was a work of nearly 40 people that lasted 8 months,” said Maximillian Dood, a streamer who tasked the lead modder with continuing work on the mod after I found out about it back in May.
So here you go. It’s a good renovation. The cel-shaded style is well used to evoke manga and anime in Arc System Works fighting games like Guilty Gear Strive, so it makes sense to me that an MvC game would look striking if done in a similar style.
