Pocket Pokémon TCG took the world by storm, as every shiny modern Pokémon app does, but for good reason. TCG Pocket is a great addition to your collection of trading card games, and with tens of millions of downloads, it’s straightforward to see where success lies. It’s straightforward to exploit and understand, and is a great way to introduce Poké players to the TCG arena, with a slightly toned down, much tastier version of the classic gameplay compared to its predecessors.
But we wouldn’t have Pokémon TCG Pocket without the original Game Boy game, which Nintendo released in Japan in 1998 and then came to North America and Europe in 2000. This original version appeared on several Nintendo consoles over the summer, with a port to 3DS in 2014, and then during the 2023 Nintendo Direct it was announced that the game would be available in the Nintendo Switch Online library.
Given that the Pokémon TCG Pocket app is so popular, we think it’s worth giving a tip of the hat to the original game and maybe even creating a sequel for Nintendo Switch. This makes sense considering how popular the modern Pocket app has become, and we’d love to see Nintendo give the OG some love. Thanks to a massive anime, several movies, and a hundred and one different games, it’s straightforward to forget that the world of Pokémon lives on in the real world in the form of physical cards, and also carved a place in the video game industry back in the mid-90s.
Understandably, combining these two mediums in the form of an online card game has always been a winning combination. The success of Pokémon TCG Pocket proves that’s still the case, even two and a half decades later, but with the release of Switch 2 approaching, we’d love to see the classic Game Boy title get an updated sequel on an updated console. It’s true that we’ve already seen the second game, but Nintendo only released Pokémon Trading Card Game 2: The Invasion of Team GR! in Japan.
Even if we don’t get a full sequel, we’d love to see Pokémon TCG Pocket come to the Nintendo Switch online store. With millions of downloads on mobile devices, we’re sure Pocket would be even bigger and better if it came to Switch 2, but we’ll take what we can get.
