We get Okami 2 with Hideki Kamiya at the helm

Capcom is working on a sequel to Okami, a gorgeous game reminiscent of 2006’s Zelda in which you play as a sun goddess in the body of a wolf, traversing a world of ink and parchment. The game is co-developed by M-TWO Inc, Machine Head Works Inc and CLOVERS Inc and directed by original Okami game director Hideki Kamiya. I’m tickled pink, I tell you. Find the trailer below.

There’s not much to say at this stage – the game doesn’t even have a formal title – but we do have a little announcement from Capcom. Here it is: “Okami is a game critically acclaimed for its unique world, gripping story and exciting adventures. Now a new adventure has begun in the same spirit as Okami.”

The trailer is a departure from the sumi-e-inspired graphics of the original game – it’s flashier and, um, hairier. Perhaps a little too busy for comfort, next to the crowded but clear scrolling of the first. But there are plenty of familiar sights: the goddess Amaterasu herself galloping through green fields, a spinning reflector dish on her back, and the Heavenly Brush brazenly appearing at the end.

I wasn’t expecting a recent Okami game this year 2024. (I wasn’t expecting a recent Onimusha either. Good job, Capcom.) The first part is perhaps less amazing in hindsight – it’s sullied in a way that Zelda ‘t is, with a few cheesy elements Action RPG with some repetitive fights. But my God, he has vision, heart and imagination. I’m still playing introductory video from time to time to perk up. I never got around to playing Ōkamiden, the Nintendo DS spin-off. Maybe it’s time to change that.

It’s something of a homecoming for Kamiya, who left Capcom to co-found PlatinumGames in 2006. He left Platinum last year to go independent, commenting that he “will continue to create Hideki Kamiya in my way.” Was suggesting ideas for a sequel to Okami for years.
