In the UK, if someone is amiable – or indeed unfriendly (a fine line) – to a stranger in a bar, they are most likely to call them a ‘mate’. But from today’s list, a few nicer ways of addressing someone you don’t know caught my eye. Did you work for some fancy legal institution. I’m sure you would call any other person your CONTEMPORARY, PARTNER, or MEMBER, but where is the fourth word for this formal group?
Casting the net close to home, it was effortless to get a bucket of FLY, CHUM, BAIT, and LURE (see what I did there?). but the fact that it was a GREEN group meant that there had to be an easier catch at the start.
Connections really knows how to keep things humble, so I went into a Shuffle frenzy trying to see the other sets. Thinking it must describe an animal, I chose HORNS, WINGS, LEGS, and BOW, but I was missing one.
Completely clearing myself of the idea of a “partner,” the guesswork earned me a YELLOW game, and I returned home with more happiness than knowledge of the WNBA. But it wasn’t a dunk.

What are NYT calls?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is effortless, yellow is slightly more tough, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very tough.
The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.
However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can unrecognized answers.
You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
