‘I can’t imagine anyone else playing Aragorn’ – as work continues on The Hunt for Gollum, creators keep their fingers crossed that they can convince Viggo Mortensen to return

It looks like Warner Bros. is trying to bring back as much of the original cast as possible for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, as they are now hunting down Viggo Mortensen.

Back in September, it was reported that Warner Bros. is trying to get Ian McKellen to return to his classic role as Gandalf in the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum. While it’s not yet clear whether he’s signed on or not (the script isn’t fully ready yet), McKellen isn’t the only classic Lord of the Rings actor they’re hoping to add to the cast. I’m talking to Playlist“The Lord of the Rings” author Philippa Boyens said that fan-favorite character Aragorn will feature very prominently in “The Hunt for Gollum,” and she, along with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, are very hopeful that Viggo Mortensen will reprise his role role. Now the huge question is whether he will agree to it or not.

Boyens noted that Mortensen doesn’t actually have a script yet and admitted that they had to first see if they would write a good enough role for him, and then whether the actor would be able to “find enough in it to see that it’s a performance, that he wants to take.” But don’t worry, because even if Mortensen doesn’t take the role, they’ll still want him to be heavily involved — how do we convey this character? But it’s literally going to take a few, a few months to make that decision. He has to read the script first.”

The film will not be a sequel or prequel, paralleling the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, whose story begins after Bilbo’s birthday party, but before the Mines of Moria. These will not be two films, as we have already informed, but one, the second one being a film entitled a separate Lord of the Rings project entirely. Basically, Lord of the Rings fans will be eating well… in a few years.
