Well done, Helldivers 2 players, because thanks to you, the composer of the game’s great soundtrack did not give up on creating orchestral music together

Apart from the gameplay, many players’ favorite thing about Helldivers 2 is the soundtrack, but its composer almost gave up on orchestral music.

I would argue that one of the most significant aspects of any game is its soundtrack. A bad one will be quite noticeable, especially since songs are often reused, and considering the length of so many games and the fact that live games will involve doing the same thing over and over again, good music is significant. That’s why it’s a good thing that the soundtrack to Helldivers 2 is so good, because this game was undoubtedly one of the best this year. As it turns out, however, the game’s composer, Will Roget, almost decided to “move away” from orchestral music, but players’ reactions to the Helldivers 2 soundtrack gave him great faith in continuing this work.

On his personal Twitter account, Roget wrote: “Funny story: before Helldivers 2 came out, I was considering moving away from writing orchestral game music – it seemed players were tired of it and it was ridiculously arduous, time-consuming and costly to produce. and I wanted to try modern things.” In subsequent tweets, he continued: “So imagine my shock when I saw how enthusiastically players reacted to the HD2 score! From reaction music videos to covers (even a full metal album?!), listeners have never been more encouraged by listeners. In the case of traditionally orchestral music, what I thought was impossible has come true.

Roget’s Twitter thread was inspired by former Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt, who noted that the fact that the Helldivers 2 soundtrack didn’t “won an award or be nominated for best score baffles me,” which I can’t stand. I will certainly agree. However, awards are not everything and the fans’ reaction definitely means more to Roget than the trophy!
