Caleb McAlpine, a terminally ill “die-hard Borderlands fan” who asked in October for a chance to play Borderlands 4 while he still can, confirmed in Reddit that Gearbox was a huge success, saying that his experience in the studio was “simply amazing”.
McAlpine said Gearbox put him and his friend up at the Omni Hotel on St Starhome of the Dallas Cowboys NFL team. “The hotel also wanted to do something nice and invited us on a VIP tour of the entire facility,” McAlpine wrote. “Needless to say, being a Lions fan, I have to talk a lot, lol.”
McAlpine’s journey to see Borderlands 4 started in October when he asked the Borderlands 3 subreddit for aid, he contacted Gearbox and asked if there was any way to achieve this. Redditors forwarded his request to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who quickly contacted McAlpin and said, “We’ll do everything we can to make something happen.”
“When I got the email from Randy, I couldn’t believe it,” McAlpine said GamesRadar then. “It was great to see the CEO of Gearbox email me and say he would do everything he could to help me. Honestly, I was just impressed. In the good sense of the word. I never expected anything like this. It almost felt like a dream honestly.”
In his update, McAlpine also expressed gratitude to everyone who helped get his request to the right people. “I don’t know if I’ll be around when the game comes out, but I just want to thank you all for your love and support and for helping me make this happen,” he wrote. “It was a really amazing experience and it was just amazing.”
