Showtime continues its efforts to bring back Dexter in its up-to-date prequel series, Original Sin, and the first trailer for the series has finally arrived.
Dexter may have ended over a decade ago, but in the age of reboots and, above all, intellectual property, there has been an attempt to bring the once popular franchise back into the spotlight. In 2022, we got the sequel series Dexter: New Blood, which takes place 10 years after the events of the original series, and now Paramount and Showtime have released the first trailer for the upcoming prequel series: Dexter Original Sin. Before you watch the trailer and read on, I should take note of the spoiler warning for the ending of New Blood, as the prequel actually seems to be directly connected to the sequel, which is fascinating enough. You have been warned!
As you can see in the trailer above, there are several scenes at the end of New Blood showing Dexter lying in the snow with blood pooling around him after being shot by his son Harrison. During treatment in the hospital, his life literally seems to flash before his eyes and thus we get a series of prequels. “Dexter: Original Sin,” set in Miami in 1991, follows Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he transforms from a college student into a vengeful serial killer,” reads the official plot description. “When his bloodthirsty desires can no longer be ignored, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness.

“Under the guidance of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), he adopts the Code to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society so that they don’t fall on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship with the Miami Metro Police Department.”
Michael C. Hall also returns as Dexter in narrative form, and even Buffy’s Sarah Michelle Gellar guest stars. We can of course assume that nothing drastic will happen to Dexter considering this is a prequel, but it could still be a lot of fun.
There’s also a chance this series will answer the question of what happened to Dexter at the end of New Blood, as there’s another sequel coming up called Resurrection – it wouldn’t be all that surprising if the prequel ended with Dexter waking up alive and, well, but you’ll have to wait until December 13, when the series premieres on Paramount+.
