Even the director of Mass Effect can’t survive in the gaming industry as his own studio and “brand new” sci-fi game are shut down

No matter who you are, the gaming industry is having a tough time right now as Humanoid Origin, the fresh studio from the director of Mass Effect, is shutting down.

I feel like every week over the last year there have been announcements of layoffs, shutterings, etc. and unfortunately this week is no different. In 2021, Casey Hudson, director of the original Mass Effect trilogy (and the lead character at the beginning of the much less well-received Anthem) announced that founded a fresh studioHumanoid Origin and that it will be developing an “entirely new IP”. Well, that’s no longer the case, as the official Humanoid Origin LinkedIn page went live yesterday shared a post announced that it would be closed due to lack of funds. “Earlier today, we informed our staff that Humanoid Origin will be shutting down,” the post reads. “Despite efforts to protect the studio from broader industry challenges, an unexpected funding shortfall has prevented us from continuing operations.

“We are devastated that we will not be able to complete our fresh sci-fi universe. However, at the moment our main focus is on our team and we are committed to supporting them in their transition to fresh employment. During our time together, the team made incredible progress and showed that it is possible to do amazing work while fostering a culture of fun and creativity. We thank them for their talent, courage and friendship. Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout our journey. ”

This is obviously a disturbing turn of events, and what’s worse is that it’s not all that uncommon. Another growing problem over the past year, in addition to the layoffs of over 14,000 people that occurred in only the year 2024 itself. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that everyone in the studio will be back on their feet.
