An entire group of Oculus VR headsets were allegedly stolen by a group of men who waited for truck drivers to get out of their vehicles to eat or go to the bathroom, then jumped in and drove them away.

As recently reported 404 Media AND Court watchsix men have been indicted after allegedly stealing semi-trucks carrying exorbitant items such as underwear, ATVs and high-end technology equipment. According to court documentsmen have reportedly committed these crimes across the United States, including in places such as Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Indiana.

The thieves would stake out distribution facilities and then follow the semis to a gas station or truck stop. When the driver left to refuel, rest or employ the restroom, the men would steal the entire trailer and drive away with the goods, trailer and all. The men then allegedly connected the stolen trailer to their own tractor-trailer and left the stolen trailer behind.

On May 6, 2022, two of six co-conspirators located a truck in Louisville, Kentucky filled with approximately $1.5 million worth of Meta Oculus virtual reality headsets. The two men allegedly stole a valuable truck from an Indiana truck stop and then drove it to Vanderburgh County, where they abandoned the tractor and drove away with the trailer.

According to the indictment, the men often “painted logos and/or identification numbers on the stolen trailer and used various license plates to conceal the identity of the trailer and avoid detection by law enforcement.” The group’s goal was not just the Meta. They were alleged to have stolen trucks containing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of products from various companies, including Microsoft, Sony, Logitech, JBL and Bose.

The indictment says the group mostly took the stolen goods and sold them to a buyer in Florida for “a fraction of the retail value of the stolen cargo.”
