Join the likes of Metroid 2, Kirby’s Dreamland, Link’s Awakeningand tons of other amazing Game Boy games, the Nintendo Switch Online retro catalog now includes another classic: Donkey Kong land. It is nominally a Game Boy adaptation Donkey Kong country on the SNES, but the game actually has a slightly different story, enemy changes, and several entire levels that aren’t there Country.
The main reason why I love Donkey Kong land – and now that we’re here, Donkey Kong Land 2 AND 3which will likely soon be available on Nintendo Switch Online at the rate these retro games are being added – this is how Donkey Kong Country’s soundtrack has been adapted to the Game Boy’s sound chip. The remakes of these classic, catchy songs are impressive; you can get a taste of the audio in the trailer that’s inside Nintendo’s post on X announcing the game’s addition to Switch Online. No hint of the SNES, but I just prefer the sound of the Game Boy. I would pause the game just to listen to specific songs.
By the way, the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy is now available on Nintendo Switch Online, so you can really delve into DK’s catalog if you’re so inclined. These games hold up pretty well considering they’re from the 90’s.
