Sony has reportedly entered into talks with Elden Ring developer Kadokawa Corporation to acquire the company, Reuters claims from two sources. Talks are said to be ongoing and if successful, a final deal could be signed in the coming weeks. The value of the company’s shares is estimated at approximately $2.7 billion, of which Sony already holds two percent.
If the deal goes through, it would mean Bloodborne developer FromSoftware’s Dark Souls would come under the Sony banner, but Kadokawa Corporation is much more than that. The company’s main activities concern manga, books and film. Sony already owns significant anime distribution platforms like Crunchyroll and Funimation, so the acquisition will involve much more than just video games. Spike Chunsoft is also owned by Kadokawa Corporation, the studio behind titles such as Danganronpa.
Both Sony and Kadokawa Corporation declined to comment on the Reuters report. If the deal goes through, it will be the first PlayStation-related acquisition since Concord developer Firewalk Studios purchased in 2023. Previously there was Haven Studio with upcoming Fairgame$, Bluepoint Games, developer Returnal Housemarque and Nixxes.
