Foxhole is one of my favorite games that I enjoy reading about even if I don’t play it. It’s a multiplayer World War II game from above, where battlefield logistics are as essential as aim and flank. The developers have just announced that a fresh major update, Foxhole: Airborne, will be released next summer, which will add planes to the game for the first time.
Planes in an MMO game with a top view? It makes a little more sense if you watch the trailer.
Dropping bombs on the world below? I see. Delivering paratroopers behind enemy lines? Love it. I’m not sure how air-to-air combat works. There’s a shot of two agile fighters diving and shooting down several lower-altitude bombers in the trailer, but I can’t figure out how this actually works with player action.
Otherwise, the dogfight connects to the expansive Foxhole battlefield in obvious ways. This expands the logistical side of the game as players will have to work to produce and supply planes, and “every pilot is a player” as the trailer says, with players also able to take on the role of an on-board gunner.
Foxhole Airborne is the sequel to Foxhole: Naval Warfare, which added ship-to-ship combat and beach landings last October. This means that the game will now feature land, sea and air combat, all on the same persistent battlefield.
To prevent infantry from feeling neglected, an infantry update will be released later this month on November 18. It aims to modernize combat, including introducing fresh anti-tank weapons, close combat, changes to medics, and changes to durability and suppression. Sounds like a solid set of changes. You will find screenshots of this and other aircraft, in the Steam Developer News post.
