The launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard made it the biggest single-player game in EA history on Steam, topping the charts and beating 2023’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
At the time of publication, Dragon Age: The Veilguard peaked at 70,414 concurrent plays, putting it just outside the top 10 most-played games on the platform, which had mostly positive reviews. It takes one place ahead of Baldur’s Gate 3, which continues to enjoy unflagging popularity thanks to the introduction of mods and other novelties. EA’s previous record was Jedi Survivor, which achieved an all-time high of 67,855.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson predicted Dragon Age’s success during Tuesday’s earnings call, saying BioWare has “returned to its strengths” and that it will benefit from reduced competition thanks to Ubisoft’s decision to delay Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
In our review we wrote: “Dragon Age: The Veilguard refreshes and revitalizes a multi-threaded series that has endured its middle years, and leaves no doubt that it deserves its place in the RPG pantheon. The next Mass Effect will have a very arduous act to follow, something I never imagined saying before I got sucked into this adventure.
Overall, this is a good start for BioWare’s modern RPG, considering it released on a day when most fans are at work or school. Its performance will be worth keeping an eye on ahead of its first full weekend as players delve into the first modern version of Dragon Age since 2014.
