Team17 and Piraknights games announced Syntopica game about gods in which you play the role of the devil. Wait… It’s a management game where you manage hell. This is better. The premiere in early access is scheduled for 2025.
The trailer and press materials don’t really convey what’s going on very well Syntopicbut I will do my best. There are two sides to the gameplay. There is a hell where you make a profit by punishing people for their sins. They are eventually resurrected back to Earth, where you then influence them to sin even more, and when they die, you can punish them again to make more money. I hope I’m describing this correctly.
The trailer shows what looks like a game Bullfrog or Lionhead made in the 90s. The overworld reminds me Dungeon Guardian (although the game itself is nothing like this one). The Hell in the Game segment has some Startopia Or Theme Hospital look at them, but perhaps also the souls you are punishing look like they are on a conveyor belt. I’m intrigued.
I’m also curious about the outside world. The trailer shows a succubus seducing an army and a burning building. It seems there is a balance to be struck regarding inflows and sins. You can’t just become greedy, trick everyone into sinning, and then kill everyone for huge profits. One of the clearer statements in the press release said:
“Make sure your souls undergo effective “re-education” to avoid the accumulation of sins over many lifetimes…no one wants to face the demonic invasion that will inevitably result from too much corruption in the world.”
I’m interested. Like I said, this feels like a Bullfrog game, and while many of these games would live up to the ambition but often fall brief in execution, the fact that there was nothing quite like it makes them memorable. And that could be the case here, but I don’t know, there’s a strange paucity of information.
We will undoubtedly find out more as Syntopic early access launch is approaching in 2025.
