Nintendo has (at least) another Wii U port in the tank for the Nintendo Switch: a sci-fi role-playing game Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition will be released on Switch on March 20, 2025, Nintendo announced on Tuesday. The Final version will introduce improved graphics, added story elements and other unannounced features to the original game.
Nintendo trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition ends with a joke that seems to refer to the reissue’s extended story. Contains an alternate version of the post-credits scene from the original The Xenoblade X Chroniclesin which Lao Huang wakes up on the beach and is greeted by a mysterious hooded figure. The original game ended with the line “This story truly never ends…” and it looks like Monolith Soft and Nintendo will live up to that tease almost a decade later.
The creators of Monolith Soft have released The Xenoblade X Chronicles for Wii U in 2015. The open-world RPG takes place in the near future in New Los Angeles, a human colony on the alien planet Mira. As a member of BLADE – Builders of the Legacy After the Destruction of Earth, of course – your goal is to explore Mira and rebuild civilization for humanity’s last survivors, all while piloting a powerful, customizable mech known as Skell.
We had mixed feelings about the original game, praising the epic gameplay The Xenoblade X Chronicles as “one of the best-looking titles on the Wii U”, but has been criticized for its glacial pace and confusing user interface. “Monolith Soft has once again created something unique with the name Xenoblade; “Something special just got buried under a mountain of irritation,” we said in our 2015 review The Xenoblade X Chronicles.
