PlayStation Gamer Spends $2,000 on 24 Years of PS Plus to Avoid Increasing Price Hikes

Published:

One forward-thinking PlayStation fan dropped over $2,000 on PS Plus for 24 years to avoid increasingly regular price increases.

Reddit user On_Reddit_In_Class said they have “decided to bundle PS Plus subscriptions until 2048 due to the absurd price increases over the last few years.” They plan to play for the rest of their lives, so they decided they would “save a lot of money this way.”

A PS Plus Essential subscription costs $79.99 per year, so a 24-year subscription costs $1,919.76. Sony was then kind enough to offer the player an 89% discount to upgrade to a Premium subscription through a bizarre loophole, charging just $199.99 instead of $1,889.75, bringing the total to $2,119.75.

While the reaction to On_Reddit_In_Class’s post was a mixture of shock and delight, there is at least some logic behind this move, assuming PlayStation Plus remains popular into the mid-21st century. Prices for subscription services are rising, with everything from PS Plus to Xbox Game Pass and Netflix rising.

Sony last raised the price of PS Plus in September 2023, from $59.99 to $79.99 for the most basic tier. “This price adjustment will enable us to continue to provide high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service,” it said at the time.

Analysts say this is inevitable, so another boost in the future is not ruled out. Xbox Game Pass has seen a similar price boost, doubling from $9.99 at launch in 2017 to $19.99 today. Purchasing the subscription in advance, however, ensures that the price will remain the same, so On_Reddit_In_Class may be on point.
