Hong Kong-based electronics company InnLead has launched a 15.6-inch 4K Edge OLED 5D portable monitor that offers several unique features. It has a magnetic back that allows you to attach accessories to the display à la MagSafe. Some of these accessories include a magnetic stand with cover, a snap-in stand, a wireless RGB monitor delicate strip, and a magnetic phone holder, making it downright convenient to operate it as a portable workstation. The portable monitor is currently available on Indiegogostarting at $339.99 for Super Early Bird with trade-in or $399.99 without trade-in.
Edge OLED 5D uses a 60Hz Samsung OLED panel, which provides the benefits of this screen technology such as a near-infinite contrast ratio. The monitor has 100% DCI-P3 coverage for the highest color accuracy, as well as a 10-bit color gamut, making it an attractive display for artistic professionals who prefer to work on the go. It also reaches a brightness level of 440 nits, so you can see what you’re doing in moderately vivid rooms.
In addition to the 4K OLED screen and magnetic mount and dots, Inn Lead also offers a wireless transmitter accessory, allowing you to operate a portable monitor without the need for restrictive HDMI cabling. This mmWave transceiver has a range of 30 meters and you can even configure multiple transceivers, allowing you to switch devices with the press of a button.
All these functions are tightly closed in a delicate, portable and elegant casing made using the CNC method. The 15.6-inch screen weighs 1.46 pounds. or 666 grams, which makes it over 50% lighter than the 15-inch MacBook Air, and is only 7.6 mm hefty, making it thinner than the iPhone. The display also includes two speakers, two USB Type-C ports, a mini-HDMI port, and a 3.5mm headphone port.
The portable monitor is available in two versions: a non-touch model that starts at $339.99 when you trade in your senior monitor or tablet ($399.99 if there’s nothing to trade in for) if you sign up for the Super Early Bird tier. But if you wait until it hits store shelves, the Edge OLED 5D (non-touch) has a rumored retail price of $569. InnLead also offers a touchscreen version with built-in battery for $459.99 in exchange for the $519.99 Super Early Bird option. The touchscreen has an expected retail price of $700, so it’s probably tempting to reserve it now if you’re interested in it.
Please note that this does not yet include any accessories, with the exception of a free magnetic stand (and a delicate strip or phone holder, depending on the package you choose). The magnetic phone holder will cost $15.99, the snap-in stand will start at $29.99, and the wireless magnetic RGB delicate strip will cost $26.99. However, purchasing a mmWave transceiver requires a much larger additional amount of $199.00.
As always, please remember that purchasing products on Indiegogo is not a direct purchase. Instead, you invest in it with the hope that you will be among the first to receive the product if and when it hits the market. So any time you get something on platforms like Indiegogo or Kickstarter, you’re taking on some risk. Nevertheless, the Edge OLED 5D looks to be an compelling display, and we can’t facilitate but wonder how it will compare to the best portable monitors featured in our regularly updated buyer’s guide.
