After remastering Star Wars: Dark Forces and PO’ed, the madmen at Nightdive have done it again, this time with the 1995 FPS Killing Time. Despite being one of eight people in the world with a 3DO at home, I missed it the first time. Let’s find out about it together. It’s best to start with the trailer.
I’m not sure about you, but I’ll put up with even the most mediocre shooter in favor of FMV ghosts that are perfectly terrible. And say hello to the maids in Halloween costumes who come to you at the last minute with a fresh pork shank sandwich, even though you’re holding a shotgun.
“Depart for the mansion on Matinicus Island, where you will reach a mansion full of hellish demonic creatures” reads the Steam page. “Solve deadly puzzles, discover the secrets of a famous mystery, and discover an ancient artifact from Pharaoh Ramesses if you survive long enough to find it.”
There are also some “key features” further down the page. Well, I have to tell you about them. They are crucial!
• Immerse yourself in 4K resolution, 144 FPS, anti-aliasing and improved/recent 2D screens and menu graphics.
• For the first time, take on 3DO and PC enemies using weapons that were once exclusive to each version.
• Experience otherworldly apparitions and interact with a collection of over 50 live video sequences. These restored specters provide essential clues about the terrifying events that once took place in the cursed Conway mansion. Do you have what it takes to survive and uncover the mystery?
• Enjoy a full 360-degree view, allowing you to look up, down and all around. The 3D island features both indoor and outdoor areas, full of intricate details that capture the essence of the haunted and distinctive atmosphere of the 1930s.
• Explore over 45 death zones with hundreds of enemies and rooms stretching across a huge estate.
• Explore unearthed content at your own risk, including a pool house, a shipwreck and a variety of archaic artifacts.
• A horror fest for the true fan of first-person corridor chaos. Enjoy continuous gameplay with no loading times between areas and much more!
I was curious about the history of this piece, so I went to Wikipedia and I learned two fascinating facts. First, the game originally shipped on a red disc that had a bug where “the screen (became) pixelated and obstructed(d) the view” of the entire scene. 3DO, the company that published the game, offered to exchange any copies mailed to them, but apparently very few people agreed to this. As such, black replacement discs are now very infrequent.
Secondly, Killing Time was ranked second on GamesMaster magazine’s list of the best 3DO games in 1996. Here’s the full list:
I think so, Gexheads.
