NYT Connections today (game #497) – answers
The answers for today’s Connections game, #497, are…
- GREEN: INTERFERENCE NOISE Clink, Rocket, Row, MOVE
- YELLOW: NEWSPAPER WRITING COUNTRY ARTICLE, COLUMN, FEATURE, STORY
- BLUE: TABLE TENNIS NEEDS BALL, NET, OAR, Table
- PURPLE: COORDINATING JOINT HOMOPHONES BUTT, FRONT, OAR, SEWING
- My rating: Moderate
- My result: Perfect
It’s entirely possible to solve the hardest Connection group, the purple one, without knowing why you’re solving it – and I know because it happened to me today.
I already had yellow and green, BRIEF WRITING IN THE NEWSPAPER and NOISE OF DISRUPTION respectively, but I was confused by the last two. Actually, it should have been blue: TABLE TENNIS NEEDS, but at least at this stage I didn’t see the connection. However, I noticed that BUTT, FORE, OAR and SEW were homophones. While solving this early in the morning, before I was fully awake, I completely missed that they were all COORDINATING COUPLING HOMOPHONES – but I had a suspicion that they might go together simply because they all sounded like a different word, so I played along and got it right. No credit for me, but a victory nonetheless.

What are NYT calls?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is effortless, yellow is slightly more tough, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very tough.
The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.
However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can concealed answers.
You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
