Remember that time in the 1990s when Michael Jordan retired and then didn’t retire, ruining the lives of other NBA players? Well, it looks like we just got the equivalent of a video game composer, and legendary Final Fantasy songwriter Nobuo Uematsu has now said that he has no plans to step away from making game music after his work on Fantasian Neo Dimension.
If you’re wondering why he had to explain this, well, a clip posted on Fantasian’s official Twitter account yesterday I saw a composer say, “This is my last project as a video game music composer. I hope you pick it up and play it! Thank you for your support!” However, this seems to be one of those messages that got a bit mixed up in the translation from Japanese to English.

“Wait, wait, wait! Everyone composed down,” Uematsu’s tweeted from his account. “It looks like there’s been some misunderstanding, but I’m not leaving my work on video game music!
“I’m going to cut down on my video game music work a bit because I want to have more time to make the music I want. It would be difficult for me to tackle an entire video game soundtrack because the time spent composing would be too long, but I would like to continue working on tasks like one theme song.”

So there you have it, not a full retirement, but a reduction in activities so he can focus on his own things while occasionally producing an individual video game track instead of full soundtracks. It’s not exactly a press release simply stating “I’m back,” but honestly, telling everyone to hold their phone and chill is a great way to deliver a message you’ll never leave behind.
The good news is that it looks like we’ll be able to enjoy more of Uematsu’s bangers in our games for a while until the day he potentially decides it’s time to properly put away his instruments on the game front .
