In the grim darkness of the distant future, you won’t have to worry about falling victim to rival Space Marine squads while tricking the Tyranids, as there are no plans to add a PvPvE mode to Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. This is according to game director Dmitry Grigorenko, who notes, that enjoyable PvPvE is the “holy grail” of game design, highly sought after and rarely praised. Balancing shooters where players fight both each other and bots is hard, especially in a game as prone to screen-splashing offences as Space Marine 2.
The comments in question have been delivered MP1 pcs. “PvPvE is the holy grail of game design,” Grigorenko told the site. “A lot of studios are trying to find it, but a lot of them are failing. The truth is that this is a very, very hard task. It sounds great on paper, but when you actually start trying it, it becomes clear that it’s very annoying as you fight other players only to get stabbed in the back by an AI opponent.
“That’s why most games try to make sure that the PvP and PvE aspects don’t intersect so much, i.e. AI enemies are limited to specific places on the maps, etc.” – he continued. “Implementing this mode is complex and would significantly change the experience, so I’m afraid there are no plans to do so.”
I’ve written quite a bit about Space Marine 2 and related behind-the-scenes topics, but I haven’t spent any time in the game’s PvP mode, so I can’t really comment on the merits of it all. Still, it looks like Space Marine 2 PvP is a lot more claustrophobic than, say, an extraction shooter like Beautiful Light. Combine PvP and PvE pools and the result, in my opinion, is the wrong kind of bloody chaos. Remember this game there are indeed Chaos Space Marines in it. A bit betrayal of a battle brother it would be perfectly consistent with the plot.
