This can be argued GTA Online‘S Halloween event turns out to be quite popular. The zombie-destroying North Yankton Nightmare was added to the game with GTA VThe opening location, Ludendorff, was so popular that Rockstar had to augment its community goals tenfold. After three days, even this goal was already half achieved.
Yesterday, October 13, Rockstar posted on its X account that players have dispatched over 430 million zombies since the fresh mode launched on October 10. That’s more than halfway to the revised target of 800 million zombies, which itself is already up from the initial target of 80 million.
In addition to other goals, such as surviving the graveyard through three waves of zombies to earn the “Scary Cat Mask” and GTA$100,000, the community challenge prompted an astonishing number of players to return to the already wildly popular online game.
Eurogamer points towards statistics that showed that 400,000 people had logged in at the start of the event caused Rockstar to quickly revise its goals, realizing that 80 million would not take long. According to same statisticsthe number of unique players currently stands at almost 1.3 million, which means that the massive goal of 800,000,000 has been reached in a tiny time.
That was yesterday, so God knows what will happen after the three-day weekend in the US. The challenge will certainly end in the next few days or weeks before Halloween itself, which is exactly what Rockstar originally expected.
There should probably be a term for the situation where everyone always underestimates the scale of what people are capable of on the internet. Although at this point it seems unlikely that anyone could have ever predicted the feverish popularity that surrounds anything with “GTA” written on it, even 11 years since the last fresh game.
As one of Rockstar’s responders suggests“If we reach 1 billion, will we get trailer 2 of GTA 6?”
