Metaphor: ReFantazio has already sold a million copies and has only been released for one day

As announced by publisher Sega, Atlus’ Metaphor: ReFantazio has sold over one million copies since its official release date.

That’s enough to make Metaphor: ReFantazio the fastest-selling Atlus game of all time, breaking Persona 3 Reload’s record, which passed the million mark in a week.

Metaphor: ReFantazio’s global launch on October 11 has already made the Persona-style game one of the most played games on Steam, with 42,992 concurrent players at the time of this article’s publication. That number will no doubt escalate as the weekend rolls around and fans from other regions get the chance to play.

The game was also released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, but neither Sony nor Microsoft publicly share player numbers. It seems likely that the one million sales figure will grow to two million sooner rather than later.

Atlus made the announcement with the release of the illustration below by character designer Shigenori Soejima.

Metaphor: ReFantazio, from the creators of the hugely popular Persona 3, 4 and 5, is an RPG set in Britain’s Euchronia, a medieval fantasy land that mirrors the real world. You play the role of an orphaned boy who travels around the kingdom as part of the fight for the throne.

It is widely acclaimed, with IGN’s review of Metaphor: ReFantazio rated 9/10. We said: “By refining the Atlus RPG formula by weaving challenging turn-based combat with compelling social simulation mechanics, Metaphor: ReFantazio not only sends a powerful message through its political drama, but becomes a beautiful expression of the true impact that storytelling can have on all of us.”

As part of the game’s launch promotion, Sega gave UK fans the chance to become royalty in the smallest (but unofficially recognized) country in the world: Sealand.
