Silent Hill 2 players clear the fog and free the camera to reveal hidden details of the remake

The fog in Silent Hill was inspired by hardware limitations. The miniature reach of the original PlayStation, combined with a fondness for Stephen King’s The Mist, led to a city shrouded in clouds of fog that obscured distant details. This easily masked the limitations, but it also meant you heard the monsters before you saw them – footsteps or wingbeats hinting at their presence before they appeared. The designers built on this by adding a radio that buzzed with inert when reality-denying monsters were near, and solidified a recipe for effective scares that would carry over into many sequels.

Now the Silent Hill 2 remake is available on PC, modders have started working. There are already over 50 mods Nexus modificationsand more are being added all the time. Among them are two that remove fog: Sunny Hills AND Silent Hill 2 HD Collectionthe latter being a cheeky reference to the reduced fog effects in the disappointing 2012 HD re-release. While both are tongue-in-cheek – removing a signature feature of the series in favor of some fun screenshots – it’s fascinating to see what Bloober’s version of the City looks like without restraint.

Nebula480 has published a gallery of fog-free screens on the site Silent Hill subredditand these streets retain much of their mystery, even if the blocks are evident. Ruined facades, rain-slick bitumen and dead ends covered with surreal sheet frames – it’s all still fucking terrifying.

There is also Simple FreeCam a mod that will really bring your photos to life. Once installed, Alt+F1 enables the flying camera, and other commands allow you to disable the UI, pause time, teleport James to the camera, and otherwise fill in the lack of an official photo mode. It also allowed players to confirm what amounts to a huge spoiler for the game, so if you haven’t finished the original or remake, stop reading now. Goodbye!

OK, now that they’re gone, you probably had the same question I did when reading about FreeCam. Can you operate it to get through James’ car and see Mary’s body in the backseat? As Silent Hill art director and monster designer Masahiro Ito once said about the pit of rage, formerly known as TwitterJames took his deceased wife with him to Silent Hill, not in the trunk as some fans assume. There’s a reason the camera never lets you see the backseat clearly. And yes, as many players you confirmed, change your point of view and in the backseat you’ll see a floral blanket covering what was clearly supposed to be a corpse. Nice one, Bloober.

Other mods allow you to play as CJ from GTA: San Andreasoriginal Jakub from 2001or wear Robbie Rabbit’s hat. There is also first-person modealthough this is still an ongoing process. There is undoubtedly a race between Thomas Tank Engine and naked mods.
