Avatar: The Last Airbender hasn’t had much luck when it comes to adaptations, either into film or video games. Now Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive are going to approach it in a up-to-date way. The two announced an action RPG set in the “Avatar Legends universe,” the wider world and timeline in which The Last Airbender and Legend Of Korra take place.
The game, which is in its early stages of development, is being called “the biggest video game in the history of the series,” which wouldn’t be a stretch, and is being developed in collaboration with the original creators of Avatar.
It doesn’t look like players will necessarily take control of a familiar character, but information shared with IGN said that “you will master all four elements, engage in dynamic combat alongside your companions, and experience the challenges and decisions that come with being the guardian of the world’s balance.”
Avatar: The Last Airbender is a Nickelodeon cartoon that began airing in 2005. The action takes place in a world where some people from different nations can telekinetically control one of the four elements – water, air, fire and immense rocks. The hero is Aang, who as the Avatar is the only person who can manipulate all four of them.
It’s a fantastic series, especially because of the careful building of the character stories and the clear structure of the world and magic system, which makes it perfect material for a video game adaptation. Still, it featured some disappointing action games, a disappointing MMO, and a few Smite skins (pictured above). Legend Of Korra did better as an action game developed by Platinum, but as far as Platinum games go, it was a middling job for hire.
Fingers crossed that the next attempt will be better. Saber has clearly done a good job adapting Space Marine 2 recently.
