Diablo 4 originally launched with a set of powerful, unique items that were so occasional that Blizzard had to come out and confirm they were real. Only a handful of people in the world had ever seen them, which meant that for most players they didn’t actually exist.
Even though Blizzard continues to create “Uber” uniques, now known in-game as Mythic Uniques, which become more and more obtainable over time, finding them is still quite a challenge. To enhance your chances, you’ll need to gather materials to repeatedly summon and defeat end-game bosses and pray that the RNG is in your favor. This ends with Diablo 4’s first expansion, Vessel of Hate, where Mythic Uniques will finally be much easier to obtain – with one diminutive catch.
Starting next week, anyone who spends enough time fully completing the faction’s reputation board each season – which usually takes no more than a few weeks – and kills a final boss once will be able to craft a random Mythic Unique. Previously, you needed four dazzling sparks to create your chosen mythos, but Blizzard decided to compromise and introduce a random box that only costs two. The problem is that it is random, so you may not get exactly what you are looking for.
Mythic Uniques are by no means necessary to enjoy the game, but they are a lot of fun to play. Even the weirder ones are quite powerful, like Ahavarion’s Spear, which gives a random shrine buff whenever you kill powerful enemies, regularly turning you into a devastating ball of holy energy or granting you ephemeral immortality. Most people will want Tyrael’s Might, a breastplate that turns your character into a brick wall that emits holy bolts every second. Considering you can spend an entire season and never see one, I think this is a pretty generous change for most players.
The Vessel of Hate will have several ways to find mythos, including:
- Be extremely lucky if we randomly roll any monster
- Defeating tormented bosses with a higher drop chance
- Collect two dazzling sparks to purchase a random mythic unique box
- Using a unique tribute item to enhance your chances in the modern Undercity timed dungeon (requires Vessel of Hate)
- Finding enough duplicate runes and one dazzling spark to create one of your chosen ones (requires Vessel of Hatred)
Blizzard lifting restrictions on Mythic Uniques is another example of reducing the grind in Diablo 4 and lowering the barriers to access the most electrifying loot. While stream earlier this week, the developers also announced that regular unique items will drop three times more often than now. I already played with this change in my Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred review and found several uniques during the campaign. Sure, legendary items are cold, but what about some Shoes that leave a trail of ice behind you?
While the fact that you have to have a Vessel of Hate for a given mythos to be unique is a bit of a bummer, I think it’s at least a good sign that Blizzard wants to make them even easier to find. I’ve never liked the idea of having cold stuff in the game that no one will ever see, and I think these updates keep the spirit of Mythic Uniques as a occasional pursuit item without locking it down to the 1% of players who have time to spend a month farming for them .
Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred and Season 6, Season of Hatred Rising, will be released next week.
