For a newbie, Deadlock’s builds and special items can be confusing, especially if you’re more of an FPS player than a MOBA player. You can always practice building builds in-game, but it can be a little tough to think about the bigger picture when you’re trying to keep Adams from crushing your lane. Fortunately, one of the players decided to create an simple way to do this.
“I created a Deadlock build calculator” Alayton says. “It’s actually more than just a construction calculator, but it’s the most important feature right now. There is also a full list of heroes, skills and items, retaining data from previous versions. The big plus is that this data comes directly from the customer, so updates are quick, easy and inclusive.”
The name of the website is Mutexand allows you to choose any hero you like and start creating different item compilations. Instead of entering Deadlock’s sandbox to see how the items you select will affect him, you can simply utilize Mutex to quickly add and subtract items. Weapon, Vitality, and Spirit stats will change as you play, so you’ll quickly learn how different items affect your stats.
“We’ve all used the sandbox to play around with builds, and this isn’t a direct replacement for that,” says Alayton. “There is currently no way to import builds into the game, but this allows you to play around with builds when you can’t (or simply don’t want to) run the game.
“I approached the build a bit differently. Instead of going step by step, buy this, then that, etc., the focus is on seeing the impact of a specific set of items on your hero, whether that’s your hour-long end goal or the more typical 25-30k goal. souls Still allows you to add early game items and alternate items, but they are not included in stat calculations unless they are in the 12 main slots.
You can create builds in the game’s sandbox mode, which will give you a ton of information about your weapon’s stats and health, but I found playing with Mutex to be easier and faster. The custom builds on Deadlock are truly amazing. But when I choose someone else’s build, I usually don’t read what each item does, have my favorites, and then just blindly go along with what the creator suggests. So it was quite refreshing to sit down and really try to figure out what each item did and how it would affect your build using Mutex. It doesn’t take too much time, and since you can just open it in your browser, I often play with it in short bursts whenever I have a moment.
It turns out that there is also an interesting story behind the name Mutex. “In programming, a mutex is an object used to prevent multiple threads from accessing the same part of memory simultaneously by locking and unlocking the mutex (mutual exclusion),” explains Alayton. “If a thread locks a mutex and mistakenly tries to lock it again before unlocking it, the second lock will never succeed, the first lock will never be unlocked and this is called a deadlock. (There are other ways a deadlock can occur, but this is the simplest example.)” Every day you learn something novel.
