Mojang wants to release smaller updates for Minecraft more frequently, rather than one massive update every summer. This evening’s Minecraft livestream included details about the Bravery And Bundles update that’s coming next, but also the next update that’s coming in the next few months. Scary update.
It doesn’t have a name yet, but it will add The Pale Garden, a fresh biome of eerie gray trees and hanging mosses that is tranquil during the day but which is populated by a fresh crowd at night, the Creaking.
Creaks are tree-like mobs that blend into their fresh biome, making them straightforward to miss among the trees. If you spot them and attack them, they won’t take any damage. Instead, the ember beam will point you to a block in the treetops called the Creaking Heart. The Heart plays the role of puppets for the Creak, and this is what you need to destroy to defeat them. The problem is that the Creaks move towards you as soon as you look away.
If you chop down the trees in the Pale Garden, you’ll get a fresh set of airy wood that you can utilize for crafting, and the fresh hanging moss can also be moved or used to creep carpet. It’s nice, but what I’m most interested in is the potential for crowd horror, which brings to mind Doctor Who weeping angels. The Guardian, the massive mob that emerges from the ground when you make too much noise in the deep, shadowy biome, is terrifying and creates some of the best moments in Minecraft, so it’s good to have more of them.
The Creaking and Pale Garden games will soon be available in various beta versions of Minecraft.
