Helldivers 2 players have been tasked with building the “Space Station of Democracy”, a “gigastructure” of unspecified firepower whose goal will be literal democracy

Space stations are amazing, and now one of these outposts on the last frontier becomes Helldivers 2’s newest frontier in bold, community-driven storytelling. In the novel main order, players take part in the first of a four-part sequence building the Democracy Space Station. Once built, the community will be able to vote on where and how the Democrat Death Star will be deployed.

Perhaps the coolest part of the whole deal is that you get to see the DSS being built in-game as it orbits the planet Gaellivare. It will likely change and grow as players complete the Major Orders involved in building it, which will be an invigorating expansion of Helldivers 2’s unique type of collaborative storytelling. It’s one thing to receive fun lore updates on Major Orders achievements, but it’s quite another to see this striking, measurable change in the game.

The first major order is to liberate and hold Turing’s world after a five-day countdown – potentially a lofty order, but the nippy on-screen factor alone may be enough to draw the required manpower from the player base. Explanation in the universe, according to Helldivers 2 official account on The center will prototype and develop novel high-performance Alcubiere drives, capable of efficiently transporting gigastructures such as DSS.” This all sounds good, although “entomology” is the study of insects, not interstellar propulsion. But what do I know?

As always, I’m reminded of my 700-hour dalliance with Destiny 2 during the pandemic, and how group efforts never had the nippy feature of Helldivers 2 – I was just repeating the same actions over and over to fill a global meter. You need a carrot – like a goddamn goddamn skybox with a slowly building satellite – to really sweeten the deal.

I’m curious to see how the completed battle station will be deployed. “He will wield a powerful weapon guided by Helldiver that will aid in the liberation of the planet in whose orbit he orbits,” the master order explains. “Using a state-of-the-art voting system, Helldivers will determine where to deploy DSS and when to utilize its capabilities.” This sounds like a powerful novel tool for dealing with future Major Orders, but it’s also something that dedicated players can argue with, influencing votes in particularly fun or trolling ways. Though honestly, that sounds like part of the fun to me.
