Movies often portray robots as harbingers of something bad, whether or not they are evil and want to take over the world (Terminator, Yes, Robot, Matrixetc.) or are used by people (Blade Runner, There was Machina, AI Artificial Intelligencee.t.c.). But robots aren’t all bad – they can also be fun, cute and family-friendly.

Children (and adults) love putting together robot toys and figuring out how the different pieces work together and fit together. Robots have played a immense role in children’s films for years, especially before the millennium, including: A two-hundred-year-old man AND Inspector Gadget arrived in the behind schedule 1990s. While they may not be the greatest, they capture the ingenuity that makes robots thrilling for kids.

Wild Robotwhich tells the story of a robot that learns to live in the forest and befriends a cute little goose, hits theaters September 27. It stars Pedro Pascal, Stephanie Hsu and Mark Hamill and will join the lexicon of children’s films about robotic friends.

We’ve collected all of these movies and tried to rank them based on their quality, taking into account whether they’re just juvenile nonsense or something more substantial that adults will also enjoy. Let’s get on with it.
