Destiny 2 roadmap shows large changes to the game’s regular schedule

Destiny 2 Fans have been waiting with bated breath to learn more about the game’s future. Final shape The expansion concluded the long-running Light and Darkness saga and was well-received by veterans who had faithfully followed the franchise’s entire history. It was followed by a large-scale reorganization at Bungie, which saw 225 employees laid off and over 200 employees reassigned to various studios within Sony.

Monday, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Destiny series, Bungie has released a roadmap titled Codename: Frontiers, which presents the future Destiny 2. There will be two medium-sized expansions each year. In 2025, Bungie will release the Codename: Apollo expansion in the summer of 2025, followed by the Codename: Behemoth expansion in the winter. There will be an additional four major free content updates each year, in parallel with the expansions.

Expansions will offer players up-to-date stories, locations, missions, raids, and dungeons. Seasonal updates will focus more on gameplay, offering up-to-date events and introducing fresh accents to in-game activities. “Expansions started to feel too formulaic, ending too quickly, and had little replay value,” writes Tyson Green, Game Director Destiny 2. Green is a long-time Destiny developer who took over the role after Joe Blackburn left the studio prior to Final shape‘s start.

Bungie is also going to be making changes to the core game as it currently is to prevent it from offering too much to do with too little support. Bungie will be revamping the game’s activity UI, the Director, to support players find activities they like or offer rewards they’re looking for. There will also be changes to the challenge customization system, where rewards will enhance with challenge.

The end of the Light and Darkness saga does not mean the end of the multi-year campaign. Alison Lührs, narrative director at Destiny 2shares some of the upcoming story content. “We are proud of Final shape and the ending we had created for the Light and Dark Saga. And we knew that the next episodes would act as an epilogue, tying up the dangling threads of Light and Dark… but also setting us up for what would come next,” he writes.

Codename: Apollo will begin another great saga in the heart Destiny 2; while Lührs is deliberately tight-lipped about specifics to avoid spoilers, he does write that Codename: Apollo is a “non-linear, character-driven adventure” that will “introduce a ton of up-to-date characters, factions, plot twists, and more.” The name Frontiers suggests new territory, and fans speculate that the ending Final shapeThe Guardians can finally leave the solar system and travel to new galaxies.

Much of the upcoming content for Destiny 2 will be experimental. As Lührs writes, “Destiny is at its best when it’s mysterious, strange, and unafraid to try new things.” Bungie seems to be getting rid of some elements of its online shooter that were tedious to fans and experimenting with up-to-date formats and styles. The question is how those attempts will pan out, but the commitment to more narrative content is a relief in lithe of the ending Final shape and subsequent layoffs.
