Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles is getting a makeover and an upgrade, developer Tomas Sala has announced. The first change is the game’s name, evolving from Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles to Bulwark: Evolution. The name change is meant to signify a novel era for the game, which includes the novel Total Conquest mode. Bulwark: Evolution is available now on PC.
In Bulwark: Evolution’s Total Conquest mode, players will be at war with every faction of the Great Ursee from the start. Diplomacy is completely out of the question, and players must navigate regular raids and battles while trying to secure their path to safety and victory. The game will retain the original experience and free-build modes from the original release.
Tomas Sala commented on the update, saying: “You can’t force someone like me to run an Early Access campaign, I don’t even know where the game will end up 6 months after release, that would be a disaster. And here we are 5 months after release and I’m still working like every week is a novel release. The driving force behind this is community engagement. People come in and fantasize about what the game could and should be, or share their frustrations when the game doesn’t meet their expectations. It’s been a learning experience for me. Since my modding days (from Moonpath to Elsweyr), I’ve been looking for a way to get back to a more communal form of development. I don’t like set systems and set expectations, hence the evolving demo and now Bulwark Evolution. My own way of creating a hands-on relationship with my audience and community, something up-to-date, elastic and fast-paced, where updates come out daily instead of monthly, and communication is direct and unmediated. Bulwark Evolution is not the endgame; For me, this is what I consider to be the closest thing to 1.0 that I can deliver, but it’s just another starting point.”
In our review of Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles I said: “Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles is an accessible approach to city building for players of all skill levels. It encourages experimentation with settlement layout and exploration of Ursee, but some design decisions don’t feel as fluid as they could be, such as building selection or interacting with other factions. If you’re a city builder, you can put hours into it, but don’t expect it to have the same depth as others in the genre.”
