Warning: The following article contains full spoilers for the ending of Baldur’s Gate 3.
As Baldur’s Gate 3 fans frantically try to find all the secrets in the RPG’s massive patch 7 that released on PC this week, one player has discovered an abandoned, sinister ending that’s, well, a little disappointing.
YouTuber SlimXG (Thanks GamesRadar) found the ending still in the game files, accessing it by disabling the “impossible” tag. This uncovered a completely animated novel cinematic that shows the player character leaving all that stickman nonsense behind after a bad run.
As SlimXG explains, the character in his piece is Lae’zel, but the ending isn’t restricted to her. It shows Lae’zel after taking control of the Netherbrain, leaving all of Baldur’s Gate at her mercy. As she struggles with what to do next, removing the “impossible” tag reveals two novel options: “remove the tadpole at the end and walk away with your companions” and “remove the tadpole at the end and walk away from it all — alone.”
In both cases, Lae’zel removes the tadpole from his head while the onlookers, somewhat amusingly, look on in confusion, and then leaves. Basically, room alone or room with friends.
It’s basic to see why the ending was cut—it’s not even that bad, just unemotional—and since each option lasts less than a minute, it’s an annoyingly abrupt way to end the game. Still, it’s pretty witty to see the confused looks on your companions’ faces as you go through all that trouble to conquer Netherbrain, only to have it just… go away.
This is just one of many discoveries players have made since the release of Patch 7, which also includes the much-anticipated addition of official mod support. The novel bad endings are certainly a highlight, and Karlach made her a trend on X/Twitter yesterday.
And the good news is that this may not be the last novel Baldur’s Gate 3 content we see. While it was previously expected that Patch 7 would likely be Larian’s last major patch, the studio’s publishing chief tweeted that “this is not the final update,” though he declined to provide details on what’s on the horizon. Console players, meanwhile, will be able to dive into Patch 7 in October, Larian said that with the PC release.
