One of my hopes for Star Field‘S Destroyed space expansion is that the game feels more like a established Bethesda RPG. And so far, that’s been the vibe of the pre-release hype. The planet at the center of the modern story DLC, Va’ruun’kai, sounds like it could offer something closer to an open-world adventure game the fans missed Skyrim AND Fallout 4.
Bethesda has revealed some additional details about Destroyed space in the run-up to its September 30th release, including that Va’ruun’kai will have over 50 locations to explore. I have no idea how massive or how intricate they’ll be, but it certainly looks like players could spend more time on the cult world than any other planet in the base game. Here’s the rest of the brief info Bethesda shared in tweet Today:
- Over 50 modern places to discover and explore in Va’ruun’kai
- New craftable grenades that are made from organic materials you collect (and are gross)
- Fearsome looking modern enemies – stay alert as Redeemed and Vortex Horrors stand in your way…
- This is not the last time you will see Zealots, Spacers and Crimson Fleet… As you explore the planet, be on the lookout for those who take advantage of the situation.
In addition to the sprawling Va’ruun’kai map, which includes Dazra, the capital city on the homeworld of House Va’ruun, which worships cosmic horror, it sounds like the modern horror enemies could assist raise the game’s difficulty, which becomes a bit superficial after spending a dozen or so hours exploring and building gear. I’m also curious to hear more about those disgusting grenades that give me visions of piss bombs from Death on the beach.
My city I saw recently behind closed doors, viewing without interference With Destroyed space“Although you can leave the planet at any time, provided Star Fieldopen-ended nature, the story here is completely self-contained, and exploration of the planet and city will lead to discovering exactly what happened here and, we are told, “getting embroiled in a political feud between the smaller houses,” wrote John Walker in response to what was shown. “This renewed focus on how Star Field is played and experienced, it can be a boon to the ailing project.”
I sincerely hope that the sturdy sense of mood and much tighter narrative will create a denser sense of possibilities to explore and secrets to uncover. Destroyed space. My favorite moments from the base game weren’t firing up my ship’s engines and thinking about all the places I could go, but rather navigating the strained loyalties and hazardous deceptions of each city and questline. We’ll find out if that worked when the expansion arrives on Xbox and PC later this month.
