Star Wars Outlaws director ‘a little disappointed’ with critical reception

Star Wars Outlaws dropped to fairly moderate ratings across the board last week (at least in terms of popular video games). We gave the game a 6/10, with its mediocre combat and stealth being the main drawbacks. Its aggregate Metacritic score is somewhere in the mid-70s (depending on platform), which are respectable numbers, at least in our eyes. Despite this, Ubisoft Massive director Julian Gerighty says he’s “a little disappointed” with the game’s critical reception.

Speaking to GamesRadar+Gerighty believes that players on the ground are enjoying the game more than its Metacritic score suggests, and said, “I’m a little disappointed with the Metacritic score; obviously acclaim from the press and critics is very important to us, but players really identify with what we’ve done.”

Gerighty says the team behind the game feels a “level of pride, happiness, and accomplishment” for the work they’ve put into it. It took about four years to make, during which they “literally reached for the stars.”

That’s not as bad as it sounds, though, because Gerighty is looking to the future: “This is going to be a game that millions of people are going to play for years and years and years, and we’re never going to stop improving it. Well, that’s a lie – we’re probably going to stop improving it, but today I’m not thinking about stopping improving it.”
