Disney Step is a modern AR game available exclusively in Japan, where you go on a treasure hunt

  • Disney Step is a modern location-based game based on augmented reality
  • Of course it’s a Disney brand and collectibles

It’s uncommon for a major brand to release a mobile game that manages to fly under the radar, but today’s topic certainly did. And that could be because Disney Step seems to be (for now) a Japan-only release. But what’s the massive deal? Well, let’s see what we can gather from this official website and trailer.

So right away we know that Disney Step is an AR game. If the logo and name weren’t enough of a clue, the fact that the game is based on a treasure hunt in “Your city” is a pretty good indicator. This is also confirmed in official sources, although translated, so there is always room for error.

A quick look at another official source I found, the Japanese station Famitsushows a Pokémon Go-style interface, with your character moving around a map of the local area towards points of interest. It doesn’t appear to feature any combat aspect, so we can reasonably assume it’s aimed at a younger audience.

Go this way

It’s engaging to see the Disney Step debut in such a low-profile way. But then again, Japan is supposedly one of the most significant markets for AR games, so it shouldn’t be surprising that it’s set to debut there as part of an upcoming closed beta test. Hopefully, we’ll hear more about that in the near future.
