If you’ve recently fired up the mobile version of Resident Evil 4, 7, or Village and discovered you can’t play without an internet connection, you’re not alone.
It’s fairly common for many mobile titles to require an internet connection, especially gacha games that will run checks to make sure you’re not cheating, but it’s scarce for single-player games to require one. In addition to what some fans have noticed online, a recent update to Resident Evil 4, 7, and Village on iOS has made it so that an internet connection is now required to run the game. “Due to changes to the launch process, an internet connection is now required to run this app,” the update notes for each game read.

This is of course a completely strange choice, considering that users Reddit suggesting it could be due to data collection or DRM checks, though that’s just speculation and it would be odd to make that point considering how many single-player games don’t require an internet connection. Several other Reddit users have also expressed a desire to request refunds in lightweight of the change, though given how many people have supposedly purchased these games, it’s likely not going to be that many people.
In July, store data estimates from Appmagic (via Mobilegamer.biz) the iOS version of Resident Evil 7 in particular sold around 2,000 copies, noticeably below, not above. These aren’t the only mobile ports of large AAA games to have apparently it sold poorlyso it really doesn’t seem like there’s a huge market for these types of games, especially considering they cost the same as consoles. It doesn’t facilitate that if you’re only playing on a touchscreen, it’s a pain, so overall, you’re probably better off sticking with console or PC.
