Frank West’s 2006 adventure story set in a shopping mall and involving zombie killing. The Dead Uprisingwill be resurrected for the newfangled era, but as a remaster — not a full remake — this September. Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster gives the original Xbox 360 game a very nice look, but the novel version is about more than just improved graphics.
The development teams at Capcom and NeoBards Entertainment are addressing some of the shortcomings of the beloved original game. Dead Rising Deluxe Remasterit’ll be easier (or at least less frustrating) to rescue survivors in the zombie-infested Willamette Parkview Mall. Frank can now move and shoot while talking into a walkie-talkie. Players will even know if the trusty weapon in their hands is about to break from overuse.
But that’s not all that’s changing. Polygon recently spoke with Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster development team via email. We asked what was being covered in the remaster of this zombie classic and why some elements of the game were getting an update.

Polygon: Revisiting the original The Dead Uprising What was one of the first things the team noticed about this project and said, “Oh, this needs to change!”?
Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster development team: Compared to newer games, The Dead Uprisingthe original control specs make it tough to say the game is uncomplicated to play. That’s the first thing we felt needed to change. For fans of the original game who are used to the older controls, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster offers the ability to select “Classic” control from the Options menu.
Did the team make any engaging or exhilarating discoveries while replaying Dead Rising?
Returning to the original game to develop it Dead Rising Deluxe Remasterwe found that many of the items available to players in the game had very detailed specifications that the average player might not be able to pick up on just by playing. I guess you could say that the team that worked on the original game put an “insane” amount of attention to detail.
For example, when riding a skateboard, players can accelerate by moving the left stick of the controller back and forth. We were surprised and amazed at the level of detail that the creators of the original game put into it and tried to recreate it in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster.
The Dead Uprising has some pretty strict rules, and the original wasn’t always player-friendly, but it’s also loved for those quirks. What was the approach to updating The Dead Uprising meet contemporary tastes while retaining the spirit of the original?
We consulted with various staff members who worked on the original game in hopes of increasing playability and incorporating positive elements of the original game into Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. We also made an effort to include features that were necessary to make the game more enjoyable, while still preserving elements from the original that may have seemed inconvenient at first but eventually became part of the The Dead Uprisingunique charm.
For example, we understand that some players may want to play without worrying about real-time progress. Deciding what to prioritize in a confined time is one of the The Dead Uprisingmain components, which is why we decided not to include a function that simply stops the passage of time.
That said, having time progress at a set speed can lead to a sense of downtime that doesn’t necessarily make the game more enjoyable. In response, we’ve implemented a feature that allows players to fast-forward time at their own discretion.
The Dead Uprising is well-known for some engaging achievements (“Frank the Pimp,” “Zombie Genocider,” etc.). What was your general approach to “refreshing” the achievements this time around?
Several memorable achievements from the original game have been retained, but several trophies/achievements have been updated for the release Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. One thing to note is that we’ve made changes so that none of the achievements are obscenely arduous to earn.
You are removing erotic points from photos. What was the reason for this change? How will it affect some tasks?
We believe that the general topics The Dead Uprising are not focused on erotica and therefore have decided that erotica point rewards are no longer relevant to the overall goals of the photography elements Dead Rising Deluxe RemasterOf course, players can still take photos of anything in the game world.
We have received some constructive feedback from beloved fans who love the original system. Among them was the suggestion that Erotica Points could be awarded for photographing male characters as well, but we felt that such an implementation would not be possible at this time. We have also changed the Erotica-related tasks from the original game so that they can now be completed in a variety of ways. We hope that fans will continue to share their feedback with us after the game is released.
We saw novel costumes, novel controls, and novel audio — what other novel features do you think fans of the original game will enjoy the most?
Many novel skill books have been added Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. Combining them with in-game items can provide novel gameplay experiences, so be sure to collect them and try them out for yourself.
