Hey PlayStation Community! We’re Monster Couch, creating digital board game adaptations. Our digital version of Wingspan – one of the most acclaimed board games in recent years – will be available on PS5 and PS4 on October 11.
We’d be content to tell you all about it – let’s start with the basics.
Wingspan, at its core, is a strategic card game where each card is a bird that you place in one of three habitats in your portfolio – wetlands, meadows, and forests. Sounds effortless, right? It is! But the devil is in the details, as each habitat has a specific purpose, and each card you place has its own cost and unique abilities that you can employ. By thinking strategically and cleverly combining the abilities of the birds, you will create satisfying combinations, chains, and engines that will earn you victory points, and by scoring more than your opponents, you will win the game.
At the same time, the game offers a cozy, relaxing escape. You’ll place your birds in idyllic reserve backdrops, listening to their chirps and the game’s peaceful soundtrack. It’s a change of pace from the frenetic pace of some other games on the market. That’s because we wanted Wingspan to be something you could play to unwind, and the visuals and music were created with that in mind.
Let’s talk about the game modes for a moment. Whether you’re a solo player looking to test your skills against AI opponents or the Automa (which is a specially designed artificial opponent controlled by a deck of cards, which works a bit differently than AI players), or playing multiplayer with friends or family locally, you can do just that in Wingspan. You can also join in match-made games with birders from all over the world. There are even weekly challenges for those who really want to show off their competitive spirit. There’s something for every type of player!
What sets Wingspan apart from similar titles is that it’s not just a collection of mechanics with a theme tacked on. It’s a charming little reserve full of stunning birds that you create every time you play, and the birds’ abilities match those of their real-life counterparts. For example, your hawks will hunt, your pelicans will fish, and your geese will flock together. You’ll also get to learn captivating tidbits about the inhabitants of your reserve from the cards.
What’s cold is that when Wingspan releases on October 11th, it won’t just be the base game. We’re bringing a whole bunch of expansions and decorative content to PlayStation consoles! This includes the two large expansions released so far – Europe and Oceania – with all sorts of fresh birds from their respective continents and fresh gameplay elements. In addition, there are two decorative packs coming with fresh backgrounds and avatars that you can employ to customize your in-game profile.
Last but not least, Wingspan will also be released physically at the same time, thanks to the fantastic team at Merge Games. The Special Edition box will include the following items:
- Basic game
- Expansions in Europe and Oceania
- Seasonal decoration package
