88-Year-Old ‘Skyrim Granny’ Won’t Be Making Gaming Videos Anymore (But She’ll Keep You Updated on the Quilt She’s Making)

Shirley Curry, aka “Skyrim Grandma,” will no longer be posting gaming videos, she told her viewers. Upcoming eye surgery will keep her in recovery for several weeks, and (more importantly for her) she’s just tired of playing games for an audience.

“It’s not funny anymore,” he says. in the movie“I’m sick of it. It bores me, it bores me to death. So I’m making a decision now – completely, finally – I’m not going to make any more gaming videos and upload them.”

In the video message, he speaks candidly about his decreasing desire to record his exploits in games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

“I seem to spend most of my time sitting here at this computer,” she said. “And lately… I come in here, I look at the computer and I’m like, ‘I have to make a video today.’ And then I just shake my head and say, ‘I don’t want to, I don’t feel like doing this.’ And I turn around and I leave.”

Curry gained over 1.29 million YouTube subscribers during her time in Skyrim (though she jokes that she can count her regular viewers on both hands), and became popular enough that Bethesda scanned her likeness and promised to immortalize her as an NPC in The Elder Scrolls 6, whatever that turns out to be.

Now, instead of gaming, she’ll devote time to other interests. And she might make videos about them sporadically, she says. She’s tired of doing it specifically for games. But reading and other hobbies might lead her to the camera from time to time.

“I’m going to start making a quilt I’ve wanted to make for a long time. I designed the squares a long time ago… and I’m going to show you piece by piece as I make it.

“Let me tell you about the book I’m reading, I’ll tell you a little about it in case you want to read it.”

This isn’t the first time the 80-year-old YouTuber has scaled back her vlogging. In 2020, she found herself exhausted by the time and energy demands of filming and began doing less. But as she notes in the video, the workload often came back over time. It seems like something she doesn’t want to do again, because now she’s finding it difficult to just stay engaged.

“Sometimes when I wake up in the morning and I’m so comfortable in bed, and I feel so good, and I think, ‘Oh my God, I’ve been lying here all night, I wish I could just lie here, cuddled, all day.’ Isn’t that scary?”

Not bad at all, if you ask me. Sometimes I think about my computer and want to do the exact same thing. It’s no surprise that Curry has the same struggles as most vloggers and streamers – pressure, boredom, expectations, concerns about “metrics”, personal health issues… It doesn’t matter if you’re 20 or 80. Work is work and sometimes it’s best to call it quits. My thanks to GamesRadar for spotting this story.
