This morning at QuakeCon 2024, id Software announced a number of Moose-related news, including a whole up-to-date way to play the first two classic shooters, mod tools for Eternaland much more.
Id Software’s annual convention for fans, QuakeConkicked off today in Texas. The four-day event brings people from all over the world to meet up, play games, and see what up-to-date things id Software has to offer. Tremble AND MooseTo kick off this massive event, id Software has dropped a massive amount of Mancubus-sized news Moose.
Here are the biggest and best Moose-related news from day one of QuakeCon:
New and improved way to play Holocaust, Holocaust 2, And more available now
It’s sheltered to say that the biggest and coolest news from QuakeCon 2024 was the reveal up-to-date “improved” port Moose AND Holocaust 2. This up-to-date version combines two popular and classic shooters in one package.
This up-to-date port, which is now available on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Switch, is different from previously released 2019 port. This time, Moose runs on Nightdive’s fantastic Kex Engine, the same retro-focused engine that powered last Dark forces remasterAs a result, the game now supports 120 FPS on Series X/S, PS5, and PC. This up-to-date port is also playable on Steam Deck.
Holocaust + Holocaust 2 Also includes the “id Vault,” which features concept art from both games, as well as early versions of monsters, weapons, items, props, and more.
Enhanced port includes up-to-date demons, weapons, and cross-platform play
The up-to-date port also adds a completely up-to-date, official Moose episode: The heritage of Rust. This up-to-date 16-map campaign, divided into two acts of 8 maps each, was developed by Nightdive Studios, id Software and MachineGames.
The Rust Legacy will also feature up-to-date monsters and weapons. Id Software says this is the first time since Holocaust 2In the initial release, the company officially added up-to-date monsters and weapons to the classic FPS.
Oh, and this up-to-date port also supports full cross-platform play, so you can play the classic version Moose play together regardless of platform, or let you kill your friends even if they’re playing on Xbox and you’re on PC.
Holocaust + Holocaust 2 The improved port is free for previous owners
Here’s the best news: if you’ve owned the previously released Bethesda ports, Moose Or Holocaust 2, you will get the up-to-date version of both classic games for free. Even if you only own Moose Or Holocaust 2 on PS5, it doesn’t matter, you’ll also get access to this up-to-date, improved port.
Id Software claims that downloading a free updated version Moose AND Holocaust 2 this should happen automatically on consoles and PC. In fact, your copy Moose may already be updated.
And so, The Holocaust and The Holocaust 2The up-to-date version of the game is available for free for Game Pass members on PC and Xbox.
Old Ports Moose & Holocaust 2 They won’t disappear
However, if you don’t like any of the changes included in the up-to-date port, or you just hate the changes, Bethesda and id Software have confirmed that the previous ports aren’t going anywhere.
On consoles, you’ll still have access to these older versions, and you can download and play them for free even after today’s huge update. They’ll be treated as separate games in your console library. On PCs, users will have to try a little harder to access older ports, but they will still be available.
I appreciate that id Software doesn’t just scrap previous ports and replace them with up-to-date ones. It’s a compact thing, but it’s nice, and I wish all developers and publishers would do it more often in the future.
SNES MOOSE Getting a up-to-date, improved physical version
Although it’s not the best version of the OG MooseThe 1995 SNES port is still fondly remembered by many and seen as a technical marvel. It’s impressive that this game was ported to such a delicate console at the time. And now the SNES port Moose will be given a complete and elegant re-release.
Limited Run Games and id Software announced at QuakeCon that a up-to-date physical port of the game will be created Moose Coming to SNES in 2025. This version will feature circle strafing, “Thy Flesh Consumed”, performance improvements, level codes, and monster respawns on Nightmare difficulty. Cool stuff!
Id Software adds official mod support to Eternal destruction
It wasn’t just a classic Moose during QuakeCon, where id Software also confirmed that Eternal destruction gets official mod support.
“We are impressed DOOM Eternal community mods created without any official tools. They inspired us to release the idStudio public beta for creators and an optional mod preview on PC so players can easily browse and play mods. We can’t wait to see what this community does next,” id Software announced on its official website.
The mod tools and mods are only available to PC players and are currently in a beta-like state. But I’m excited to see what players can do with the real mod tools in Eternal Doom.
