Toonsouls is the Dark Souls of Cuphead, in case you’re in the mood for one of two solid, gold gaming journalism jokes

Toonsouls, which you can find on Steam Heredoesn’t seem to translate particularly well to the screen. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of those perpetually disgruntled ghosts and charming goofskulls, but I probably wouldn’t be writing about this platformer at all if I hadn’t seen it in motion, where the vision comes together much more. The Cuphead influence is so over the top that even pointing it out seems cliché, and I think a different music choice would have been much better in this case, but there’s no denying that Ghosts n’ Goblins throws a spanner. Get hooked.

Oddly enough, the trailer doesn’t look as good to me as some of the miniature clips that developer Toon Crafter has put together shared on Twxbbly. Maybe the mace animation is just that much smoother? Either way, I’m impressed for such a tiny project. Not many games have even tried to emulate Fleisher’s art style in Cuphead (Mouse is vaguely in the same boat), and that’s no doubt in huge part due to the incredible amount of work it takes.

By the way, dude, I am totally in love with this description on Steam.

“TOONSOULS consists of 2D graphics where players control a character who walks or jumps between different platforms on the screen. The gameplay is fun and the player can throw a spear at enemies to kill them. Your goal is to reach the end of each phase to be able to move on to the next phase.”

Where’s the lie? Where’s the lie, huh? There isn’t one! This sounds like one of those things where the author is parodying the concept of an objective game review, and I’m charmed. Do this for every game, please. Toonsouls is currently listed as “coming soon,” and all evidence suggests that’s a completely unvarnished description.
