Absent Fortnite players, it’s time to get back into the game

After a dizzying hail of jacked-up monster trucks, Magneto’s gloves, and the power of literal Greek gods, Fortnite returns to its roots. On November 7, the developers kicked off the Chapter 2 remix season. This patch reboots the Season 1 map from Chapter 2 2019 and introduces several novel locations and twists to the original version. A slightly trimmed item pool, simpler map, and a novel cast of rappers like Ice Spice, Eminem, and Snoop Dogg make this season a great time to get back into the game, even if you’re an irregular or casual player.

Here’s why this season is so good, as illustrated by an anecdote from the game.

In duos, my friend (wearing the Vi z skin Secret) and I (dressed as a girl in shark pajamas) made a last-minute decision to land at the Dogg Pound. After a failed facial scan, we were thrust into a shootout with Snoop Dogg himself, which we won and then recruited him as an NPC ally to join our team. Together we ransacked his granite and gilded mansion for weapons, then celebrated by dancing on a stack of records in the rapper’s vault. We left the area to go closer to the next storm circle, but as we approached the beach, we were killed by a figure wielding a gun that makes Eminem verses instead of bullet sounds. It was great.

Fortnite it literally changes with the seasons. Depending on the item pool, map, and overall concept, a particular version of the game may appeal to different types of players. Good for me Fortnite The season is one that isn’t afraid to utilize silly, fun elements, but doesn’t overwhelm players with a tumultuous pool of items. I like unique and thoughtful items – like Eminem’s minigun – but it’s straightforward for creators to go overboard.

The Epic Games team must balance on a tightrope they are trying to get on Fortnite Normal. It’s a ridiculous game that often benefits from “doing as much as you can,” combining tons of elements to create a joyous fever dream. But between being run over by monster trucks and being annihilated by Magneto’s Power Gauntlets and so… so many… other… super-powered items, I just couldn’t deal with it anymore. Even though I loved the theme, e.g Avatar: The Last AirbenderI felt like the core of what I liked about this game was kind of lost in the sauce.

There was also a lot going on outside the formal Battle Royale game. Over the past year, Epic Games has released all sorts of other games on the platform Fortnite platform. Suddenly, players had the opportunity to play a rhythm game, a racing game made of parts Rocket League team and a all the shit Minecraft-Esque Lego survival game. (And this is all on top of a whole host of other player-created works and other experiments with games like Autumn guys.) It’s nice to offer novel options, but ultimately none of these games changed the fact that I logged in to play a stupid shooter.

I don’t even miss the OG Fortnite. I just think it’s better this way. It gives the developers an excuse to return to most of the key gameplay elements of the shooter that make it shine by literally turning back the clock and bringing back some of the senior map and items. By adding novel elements – such as Snoop Dogg and Eminem items and locations – developers have achieved a great balance between senior and novel content. And personally, I think that’s reason enough to gather all my friends and run into him during this shortened month-long season.
